Five ways to enjoy, cook and bake with fresh, local strawberries – the first fruit of summer!

Nothing kicks off summer like strawberries and nothing is as sweet either as local strawberries!

I look forward to June every year knowing strawberries come into season. This comes with years of memories of strawberry picking – usually with my dad, later with Mike – and then making delicious goodies, jam among them. My favourite way of enjoying a strawberry that is ripe and sweet is out in the field, one second after I’ve picked it! This makes picking a basketfull a tiny bit of a challenge.

If you’re in the Hamilton area, my two favourite spots ot pick are Murphy’s out in Binbrook and Lindley’s in Ancaster. They both know hwo to grow the tastiest strawberries!

Over the years, I’ve discovered some tried and true ways of suing these berries, which lend themselves to simple dishes and family favourites for years to come.

1. Strawberry Pie

I immediately attempted my own strawberry pie and have made it every year since. The brilliance of this pie it is not baked, which in my opinion, preserves the natural sweetness of the strawberries. now I can’t go sharing family versions of this recipe, but here’s one from

2. Strawberry Tarts

3. Strawberry Shortcake

4. Strawberry Muffins

5. Chocolate Covered Strawberries
